Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) FAQ

Please find a list of frequently asked questions below. If you have any additional questions, please be sure to contact our practice.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic or functional procedure to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle from the eyelids. It can enhance vision by addressing droopy eyelids or improve appearance by reducing puffiness and sagging.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have droopy upper eyelids that affect vision
  • Experience puffiness on the upper eyelid
  • Have excess skin causing a tired or aged appearance
  • Are in good health and have realistic expectations

Blepharoplasty typically takes 30-45 min. It can be done in the office with local and oral sedation or with IV anesthesia in the office or hospital setting depending on the patient’s overall health.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during surgery. Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common after surgery but can be managed with over the counter pain medication (ie. Tylenol) and cold compresses.

Most patients experience swelling and bruising for 1 to 2 weeks. You can usually return to light activities within a few days and resume normal activities within 10 to 14 days. Full healing may take several months.

Incisions are placed within the natural eyelid creases, making scars minimal and well-hidden. Over time, they fade significantly.

Results are long-lasting, often for 10-15 years or more. However, natural aging will continue, and lifestyle factors can affect longevity.

As with any surgery, risks include:

  • Temporary swelling, bruising, or dry eyes
  • Infection or bleeding (rare)
  • Asymmetry or difficulty closing the eyes (temporary in most cases)
Dr. Rosh takes every precaution to ensure a safe and successful outcome.

Insurance may cover functional blepharoplasty if drooping eyelids impair vision. A consultation and visual field testing can determine eligibility. Cosmetic procedures are typically not covered.

You can schedule a consultation with Dr. Rosh by calling 813 303 0123.

Ptosis Repair

Ptosis, or drooping eyelids, can affect both the appearance and vision. External Levator Advancement is a surgical procedure that addresses this condition by strengthening and repositioning the muscles that lift the eyelid.

Ptosis is a condition where the upper eyelid droops due to weakness or paralysis of the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid (the levator muscle). It can affect one or both eyes and may interfere with vision or cause an appearance of tiredness.

External Levator Advancement is a surgical procedure designed to tighten and reposition the levator muscle to improve eyelid function and restore a more youthful appearance. This approach involves making a small incision along the eyelid’s natural crease to access and adjust the levator muscle.

Blepharoplasty typically takes 30-45 min. It can be done in the office with local and oral sedation or with IV anesthesia in the office or hospital setting depending on the patient’s overall health.

You may be a good candidate if you:
✔ Have drooping eyelids that obstruct vision or make you appear tired or sad
✔ Experience difficulty keeping your eyes open or fatigue from straining your eyelids
✔ Have weakened or stretched levator muscles due to aging, injury, or congenital causes

Most patients experience swelling and bruising for 1 to 2 weeks. You can usually return to light activities within a few days and resume normal activities within 10 to 14 days. Full healing may take several months.

  • Restores normal eyelid height and function
  • Improves eyelid appearance and symmetry
  • Reduces fatigue or strain caused by excessive eyelid drooping
  • Can improve vision if the drooping eyelid is obstructing the pupil

It can be done using the same incision with an upper lid blepharoplasty

  • Procedure:
    • Performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation in the office or hospital depending on patient’s health history.
    • A small incision is made in the natural eyelid crease
    • The levator muscle is exposed, tightened, and repositioned to restore eyelid height
    • Incision is closed with fine sutures that are generally not noticeable
  • Duration: The procedure typically takes about an hour depending on the complexity of the ptosis.
  • Swelling and bruising are common for the first 1-2 weeks, with most of the recovery happening within 2-4 weeks.
  • Stitches are usually removed in 5-7 days.
  • Full recovery and final results are seen in about 3-6 months as the eyelid settles into its new position.

You may experience some discomfort, swelling, and tightness around the eyes after surgery, but pain is generally minimal and manageable with prescribed pain medication.

As with any surgery, there are some potential risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Excessive swelling or bruising
  • Asymmetry or over-correction/under-correction of eyelid height
  • Dry eyes or irritation (temporary)
  • Scarring (minimal, due to the incision being placed in the eyelid crease)

Dr. Rosh takes every precaution to minimize risks and ensure optimal results.

Can ptosis repair be combined with other procedures?

Yes, ptosis repair can be combined with other procedures such as:

  • Upper Lid Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to remove excess skin and fat
  • Lower Lid Blepharoplasty ( eyelid surgery) to remove fat bags and tighten excess skin on the lower eyelid.
  • Full Face or Eyelid Laser Skin Resurfacing to smooth out wrinkles and improve texture on the face.

The results of External Levator Advancement are long-lasting and can last for many years as the procedure addresses the muscle’s position and function. However, as aging continues, slight changes in the eyelid may occur.

To learn more about ptosis repair and if External Levator Advancement is right for you, call 813 303 0123 for a consultation with Dr. Rosh.

    • Surgical Brow Lift: Results are long-lasting, often for 10-15 years, depending on the individual’s aging process.
    • Non-Surgical Brow Lift:
    Botox/Dysport: Lasts 3-4 months before a touch-up is needed
  • Surgical Brow Lift: Risks are minimal but may include scarring, infection, asymmetry, or changes in sensation.
  • Non-Surgical Brow Lift: Risks include bruising, swelling, or temporary asymmetry.
  •

Entropion & Ectropion FAQ

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the eye. This can lead to irritation, redness, tearing, and potential damage to the cornea.

  • Ectropion occurs when the eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner eyelid. This can cause excessive tearing, dryness, irritation, and an increased risk of eye infections.

Common causes include:

  • Aging – Weakening of eyelid muscles and tissues
  • Scarring – From trauma, surgery, or burns
  • Facial nerve paralysis – Such as Bell’s palsy
  • Inflammation or chronic eye conditions
  • Congenital factors – Some people are born with these conditions
  1. What are the symptoms?

    For entropion:

    • Eye irritation, redness, and tearing
    • Sensation of something in the eye
    • Sensitivity to light and wind
    • Possible corneal damage if untreated

    For ectropion:

    • Dry, red, irritated eyes
    • Excessive tearing or mucus discharge
    • Sensation of grittiness or burning
    • Increased risk of eye infections
  • Mild cases: Lubricating eye drops, protective ointments, or temporary taping
  • Moderate to severe cases: A minor surgical procedure to restore the normal eyelid position
  •
  • Surgical correction is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 30 to 60 minutes under IV or local anesthesia in the office or at the hospital. The goal is to tighten or reposition the eyelid for improved function and comfort.

    • Most patients experience minimal discomfort after surgery.
    • Swelling and bruising subside within 1 to 2 weeks.
    • Stitches are usually removed or being to dissolve within 5 to 7 days.
    • Full healing occurs within a few weeks.
    •
  • As with any procedure, risks are rare but may include:

    • Temporary swelling, bruising, or irritation
    • Slight asymmetry (which can often be corrected)
    • Infection (rare)

Dr. Rosh uses advanced techniques to minimize risks and enhance safety.

Yes, most insurance plans cover surgery if the condition affects vision or causes discomfort. Our office can assist with insurance verification. There are several procedures that can be used to improve the eyelid position, sometimes when combined specific insurance plans may not cover both at the same time although they should be done simultaneously to address the multifactorial cause of the eyelid malposition.

Eyelid Biopsy - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

An eyelid biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from the eyelid and sent off to be examined under a microscope. It’s often done to help diagnose skin conditions, infections, or tumors on the eyelid.

An eyelid biopsy may be recommended if you have a suspicious growth, lesion, or skin changes on your eyelid that need further investigation to determine if they are benign or malignant.

The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the biopsy. You may feel some pressure or a slight pinch, but discomfort is minimal.

A small area of your eyelid is numbed with a local anesthetic, and then a small sample of tissue is carefully removed. The area is then closed with stitches, and a bandage may be applied.

The procedure usually takes around 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the complexity.

Yes, typically small stitches are used to close the wound. These are usually removed within 5 to 7 days, or may dissolve on their own.

There is typically no special preparation needed. However, you should inform Dr. Rosh of any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners, as these could affect the procedure.

You may experience some swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort around the biopsy site, which is normal. Apply ice packs and follow Dr. Rosh’s aftercare instructions for the best recovery. Hypochlorous acid which can be purchased at the office is the best way to keep the area clean and then prescription eye ointment can be used on the wound 3x a day.

The biopsy results usually take a few days to a week. Dr. Rosh will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the findings with you usually 7-10 days after the procedure.

Although rare, potential risks include infection, scarring, or changes in eyelid function. Dr. Rosh will ensure that the procedure is performed safely to minimize these risks.

Most patients can resume normal activities within a day or two. However, you should avoid strenuous activities or rubbing your eyes until you’ve fully healed.

There may be a small scar, but Dr. Rosh takes great care to minimize this by placing the incision in a way that blends naturally with the eyelid’s folds.

Yes, in most cases, an eyelid biopsy can be scheduled AFTER the initial office visit and performed on a different day. This ensures that risks, benefits, complications have been discussed and reviewed at the consult and medication can be sent appropriately to the pharmacy.

General FAQs

BBL & Moxi are well tolerated with minimal discomfort. Erbium & CO2 lasers may require numbing cream, local anesthesia, or sedation for comfort.

Results are long-lasting, but maintenance treatments & skincare can help extend benefits. Chemical peels and Hydrafacials Ò can be used to keep the laser results lasting longer by collagen stimulation and skin turnover.

Lower Lid Transconjunctival Laser-Assisted Blepharoplasty FAQ

This advanced eyelid procedure improves the appearance of under-eye bags and puffiness by removing or repositioning fat through a hidden incision inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival approach). A laser is used for precision, minimizing bleeding, bruising, and downtime.

  • No visible scars and no sutures – The incision is inside the eyelid, leaving no external marks. The wound generally self seals in about 1 week.
  • Reduced swelling & bruising – Laser technology minimizes trauma to surrounding tissues.
  • Faster healing – Compared to traditional techniques, recovery is typically quicker.
  • Natural-looking results – Preserves eyelid shape and avoids a hollowed appearance.
  • Dr. Rosh usually includes lower lid C02 resurfacing as part of the procedure to improve texture changes at the same time as surgery.

Ideal candidates:

  • Have under-eye bags, puffiness, or fat pockets without excess skin
  • Want a scar-free, minimally invasive solution
  • Have good skin elasticity
  • Are in overall good health and have realistic expectations

The procedure typically takes 45 to 90 minutes, depending on individual needs.

No. It is performed under IV anesthesia with sedation in the office, ensuring comfort during the procedure. Some mild discomfort or tightness may be felt during the healing process.

  • Swelling & bruising: Usually subsides within 7 to 10 days
  • Return to work: Most patients resume normal activities within 5 to 7 days
  • Final results: Gradual improvement over several weeks to months

No. The transconjunctival approach places the incision inside the lower eyelid, making it completely hidden.

Results are long-lasting, often for 10-15 years or more, depending on factors such as aging, skin care, and lifestyle habits.

While rare, possible risks include:

  • Temporary swelling, dryness, or irritation
  • Mild asymmetry
  • Temporary blurry vision due to swelling
Dr. Rosh uses precise laser technology to minimize risks and enhance safety.

Yes, this procedure is often combined with:

  • Skin resurfacing (laser or chemical peel) to improve fine lines and skin texture
  • Filler or fat transfer to enhance volume and smooth hollow areas
  • Upper eyelid blepharoplasty for full eye rejuvenation

Since it is a cosmetic procedure, it is typically not covered by insurance. However, financing options may be available.

Orbital Tumors

Tumors can be classified as benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), and can occur in the orbit, which is the bony eye socket. An oculofacial surgeon should address tumors as soon as possible as they can distort the surrounding tissue structures and affect the eye. A complete dilated eye exam, visual fields, and imaging may be required prior to performing a biopsy.
